Spice Rubbed Sirloin

A white plate with spice-rubbed sirloin cut

This is our favorite spice rubbed sirloin steak recipe. It’s easy to prep and quick to cook, making it ideal for parties or family meals. I served this at Vadim and David’s B-day parties and there were no leftovers.

We usually double or quadruple the recipe. The spice rub really enhances the natural steak flavors. Slice it up and serve with A1 Steak Sauce. Mmmmm.

Ingredients for the Spice Rubbed Sirloin:

1 lb Top Sirloin Steak (about 1″ thick)
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp brown sugar (light or dark)
1 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp salt
A1 Original Steak Sauce

Hot to Make Spice Rubbed Sirloin:

1. In a small bowl, mix together paprika, brown sugar, chili powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and salt.

2. Rub spice mixture on all sides of the steak.

3. Refrigerate steak for 20-30 minutes.

4. Pre-Heat BBQ Grill to medium/high.

5. If your grill has a searing section, sear the steak for about 1 minute each side.

6. Transfer to the regular grill rack and grill about 4-5 minutes on each side over medium/high heat with the lid closed. This should end up medium to medium/well doneness.

7. Place finished steak on a platter and cover with foil. Let it stand for 5 minutes.

8. Cut steak across the grain into thin slices and serve with A1 Steak Sauce.

Notes: Costco has the best top sirloin and the best prices too, especially if you need alot for a party. I usually cut those in half because they are such thick steaks.

It really does not taste very spicy at all once it’s grilled.

this sounds like such a good steak recipe.. can’t wait to try it! 🙂 but i’m wondering does the steak turn out juicy after grilled or is it more dry? I seem to have a problem that when I grill my steak, it turns out dry. I usually just season with Montreal steak seasoning and a lot of onion juice.

It’s important to sear the steak first over really high heat so it doesn’t juice out. If you don’t put it over high enough heat, it will start to juice quite a bit and that’s what makes it chewy. Overcooking will also make it rubbery 🙂

Made this last night…it was great! Didn’t even need the A1 sauce as the rub gave it just enough flavor.

    one more concern….
I bought the steak at costco and its about 1 inch thick. Should I cut that in half to thin it out? I was told that its too thick and will take forever on the grill. How long does it take on the grill? I dont grill much so any tips?
I just took it out of the package and rubbed it with the spices… didnt do any cutting.
    Thx a bunch!!!

We have done both, but it grills faster when you cut it in both, but you don’ have to :).

Top sirloin is at most grocery stores – it’s just cheapest at Costco. Ask for it at the Deli and they’ll point the way 🙂

I serve with the A1. You can drizzle it over the meat when it’s finished or have each person pour their own.

I use the outside BBQ grill. I like the smoky flavor that an outdoor grill provides. I don’t have an indoor grill, so I couldn’t really recommend that.

Agree on the Costco sirloin–it’s the best at the most reasonable price–nice for dinner parties cause it’s easy to prepare if you like to grill, and yummy 🙂
